CBD

CBD stands for Cannabidiol and is a compound found in cannabis. Another compound found in cannabis is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol). This provides the ‘stoned’ or ‘high’ effect of hash and weed. CBD itself has no psychoactive effects, but does influence the effect of THC. CBD and THC are cannabinoids. These are substances that occur in the cannabis plant. These substances are very similar to the body’s own substances ‘Anandamide’ and ‘2-AG’ and act on the body’s own cannabinoid system. This system plays a role, among other things, in cognitive functioning (all processes related to thinking), the immune system and motor control.

It is possible that CBD (especially the ratio between CBD and THC) can counteract some of the effects of THC such as: acute psychotic symptoms, anxiety, memory impairment and rewarding effects. It is striking that CBD from Dutch weed has almost completely disappeared.

It matters whether CBD is administered before or at the same time as THC. If it is taken at the same time, the effect of THC is actually weakened. If so, the effect of THC is enhanced. When CBD is administered beforehand, it inhibits certain enzymes involved in the breakdown of THC. This allows THC to work longer. When administered simultaneously, the enzymes can simply do their job and the THC doesn’t work longer.

Medical use

CBD has been used more and more in recent years because of the benefits people experience from it. It would help against various complaints such as: sleeping problems, anxiety attacks, epilepsy, chronic pain, psychosis and more.

A number of studies have shown that CBD helps against epileptic seizures. It would also inhibit fear. It also seems to help with nausea and possibly rheumatoid arthritis. The scientific evidence is not yet conclusive for all applications. However, anecdotal evidence shows that cannabis may have benefits for some people.
